Summer Reading
The Adventure Begins at
Hinsdale Public Library
Jun. 1–Jul. 30
Go on an adventure this summer—and let us be your guide! Whatever your age,
you can explore new places and new ideas through reading, and HPL is the
perfect place to start your journey.
Kids: Update your log every time you read for a chance to spin the prize wheel
at the Library! Participants who nish the program will get a book to keep (while
supplies last). Don’t miss our kicko party June 3 (see below) or our storytimes
at Burns Field Park this June (see pg. 6).
Adults: Fill out a ticket when you read, listen, watch, or attend any adult program
this summer, then return it to be entered into a drawing for a Starved Rock
Lodge gift card. You will earn a treat with each ticket submitted. We will wrap
things up with a concert on our lawn later this summer for adults and families—
our July newsletter will have the details!
Teens: Grab a log from the Youth Services Desk to keep track of how many
books you’ve read and collect prizes along the way.

Spirit of Life
InJung Oh
Exhibit June–August
InJung Oh’s pieces exist as spaces
where symbols and abstractions are
animated with meaning. Oh creates
psychological moments of reection
and balance in the face of a world
lled with tensions—gendered,
cultural, and spiritual—and explores
complicated multiplicities, particularly
those pertaining to her identity.
Raised in a traditional Korean family,
she now lives with a Chinese family
in a Western society. In her work, Oh
reaches beyond preexisting symbols;
she creates them.
One of Oh’s distinctive symbols is a
visual representation of the female
gure as a beacon for herself.
Envisioning the female gure oating
in the sky like a blooming ower, Oh
started her Volossom project. The
artist combines “vol-” (which means
wish or will) and “blossom,” into
a word that means “blossom as a
manifestation of wish or will.”
The sense of balance she seeks is
also dependent upon physicality. In
her Sculptural Painting series, Oh
cuts into the canvas and dips it in
layers of media to gradually solidify
the material, working with gravity to
make a sculpture. In her Leaves of
Life series, she blows colors across
canvas; the concentration it takes Oh
to control her breath is meditative,
lling the moment with peace.
InJung Oh is a visual artist who
received her MFA from the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago in
2009 and has exhibited widely in
Chicago and abroad. She is currently
a resident at the Zhou B Art Center
and a member of the Arts Club of
Chicago. Oh was born in South
Korea, immigrated to the US at age
13, and now lives in Hinsdale.

Rediscovering the Life & Work
of Grace Bagley
Reception Tuesday, Apr. 30, 7–8 p.m.
Exhibit in Quiet Reading Room Apr. 30–May 31
Have you heard of Grace Bagley,
Hinsdale’s 19th-century social reformer?
This exhibit focuses on her extraordinary
and recently rediscovered life.
When Sana Uberoi and Lukas Ruecker
purchased the Frank Lloyd Wright-
designed 1894 Bagley House in 2021,
they didn’t realize the incredible story
they were about to uncover. Soon after
their purchase, they commissioned
architectural historians Julia Bachrach
and Jean Follett to nominate the Bagley
House as a Hinsdale Landmark. The duo
discovered that house’s original owner,
Grace Bagley, had worked closely with
Jane Addams and made substantial
contributions to reform eorts that
impacted Chicago and the nation.
With this information in hand, Bachrach,
Follett, and Uberoi set out to curate an
exhibit about Bagley’s extraordinary life.
See it at the Library April 30–May 31.
Join us for the exhibit opening on April
30. Julia Bachrach and Jean Follett will
share a bit about the exhibit, and light
refreshments will be served.
Finding Grace:
Uncovering Her Life & Story
Tuesday, May 14, 7–8 p.m.
Hear from historians Julia Bachrach and
Jean Follett will join us to share Grace’s
story and the process of uncovering it:
how they found out about her life and
works, and what they did to put the
pieces together.
