MiraCosta College is an accredited public community college
serving the North San Diego County coastal communities of
Oceanside, Carlsbad, Leucadia, Encinitas, Olivenhain, Rancho
Santa Fe, Cardiff, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Carmel Valley, and parts
of Camp Pendleton. Founded in 1934 as Oceanside-Carlsbad
Junior College on the campus of Oceanside High School, the college

Medical Assistant Program
The Medical Assistant Program prepares students for
employment as a medical assistant under the direction
of a physician or registered nurse in a clinical or ofce
setting. The curriculum is designed to provide training
in administrative

. Instruction is given in basic
medical ofce procedures, assisting with examinations,
laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, and
patient advocacy.

The Certied Nursing Assistant

Program qualies
students for certication by the California Department
of Public Health. This program is also a prerequisite for
MiraCosta College’s Licensed Vocational Nursing Program.
Admission & Eligibility Requirements
The CNA Program admittance is on a rst-enrolled,
rst-admitted basis. Participants must enroll as students
of MiraCosta College in order to be admitted. Prior
to admission, students must clear the prerequisites in
Admissions & Records. After admission, students must
submit additional requirements to the Nursing Department
prior to the rst day of class. Please contact the Nursing
Department for current requirements.
Coursework
ENGL 50, ESL 50, or eligibility for ENGL 100 is a program
prerequisite. CNA Program coursework

completed during an eight-week class that meets 23 hours
each week. This course is offered twice a semester and
once during the summer in a six-week session.

MiraCosta College offers a Certied Nursing Assistant
Certicate of Prociency.
Tuition & Expenses
On the average, a student in the CNA Program spends
about $600 for tuition and expenses. Livescan ngerprints
are required and are provided by the college.
Careers
Program graduates have found employment in acute and
long-term care facilities, in-home care and in clinics. Many
graduates increase their career potential by enrolling
in MiraCosta’s Home Health Aide, Licensed Vocational
Nursing or Registered Nursing programs.
Home Health Aide Program
The Home Health Aide Program is an opportunity for CNAs
to expand their employability.
Admission & Eligibility Requirements
The prerequisite for the Home Health Aide Program is a
valid California CNA license or successful completion of a
California CNA course within the last six months.
Coursework
This class meets six hours once a week for eight weeks.
The program includes a review of personal care services,
nutritional needs of home care patients, and medical
and social needs of clients. The program also provides
experience in an assisted-living facility.
Tuition & Expenses
On the average, a student in the Home Health Aide
Program spends about $200 for tuition and expenses.

MiraCosta College’s Registered Nursing Program is
