Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve
The Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, Chapter 1606) is an education
program. It provides up to 36 months of education benefits to members of the Selected
Reserve. This includes the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard
Reserves. It also includes the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.
Eligible reserve members may use education benefits for the following:
College, business, technical or vocational school
On-the-job training and apprenticeship programs License or certification costs
Tuition assistance Correspondence courses
National tests
And in some cases:
Remedial, deficiency and refresher training
Flight training

Who Is Eligible?
You may be eligible if all of the following are true:
After June 30, 1985, you signed a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve.
You completed your Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT).
You got your high school diploma or GED before you completed your IADT.
You are in good standing in a drilling Selected Reserve unit.
Generally, benefits end when you leave the Selected Reserves. Eligibility may be
extended if you were unable to train due to a service-related disability.
How Much Does VA Pay?
The monthly benefit is based on the type of training. If you are attending school, your
payment is based on training time (full-time, half-time, etc.). For the Educational
